Laptop Screen Repair – backlight again?

Hello, This is my first post a question. I have a Dell Inspiron 1150 laptop, I bought in 2004. Soon the dark screen, I can still slightly see the office, which works so they tend to see where the mouse is and where to click, etc. so this tells me the laptop and the screen is not bad. My friend suggested that his light bulb or background and do I connect my monitor so I can work temporarily, but this is not a long term solution. How can I get this fixed? Guarantee I have, I am sure that Dell would be very expensive if I sent them. Is there anything I or one of my friends can get more demanding and repair? Or should I bring this matter to a place of repair? If so, I would suggest to Mercer County, New Jersey? Thanks to all those who take the time to respond!
